Research Achievement Award
2009 Recipient: AHSAN KAREEM
The recipient of this year’s Research Achievement Award joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1990. A recognized research leader in the area of structural dynamics and the effects of wind on structures, he has received every major prize in his field, and, most recently, was one of only five civil engineers elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
His work is not measured by awards alone but also by the practical application of his efforts in service to society. An advocate of improved design practices and comprehensive national policies to address wind hazards, this individual’s innovative design aids for wind loads on structures have been incorporated into structural design codes in the United States and around the world.
An active mentor, he has engaged some of Notre Dame’s brightest undergraduates in his research program. His graduate students have embarked upon their own successful careers at top tier institutions and leading structural design and consulting firms, where they have been outstanding ambassadors for the University of Notre Dame.
We are proud to present the ninth annual Research Achievement Award to
Robert M. Moran Professor of Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences
The Research Achievement Award is presented annually to honor a distinguished Notre Dame faculty member who has made significant contributions to scholarship in their discipline and to the research and education goals of the University.
